Tuition
Individual Tuition
Almost all teaching at Bartholomews takes the form of one-to-one tuition. Students studying at Barts have the advantage of the maximum possible flexibility in course structure. They have complete freedom to choose syllabuses which best suit them personally and can often complete a whole A level or GCSE from scratch in as little as one term. Timetables can be flexible, often to fit in with students’ individual circumstances. Courses can commence at almost any time during the year.

Exams On Site
As we are a registered exam centre, students on courses at Barts can sit exams here in our small, familiar and comfortable exam room. We cater for all students regardless of access arrangements (extra time, scribes, etc.) and our Exams Officer is on hand daily to support and prepare students for their exams. Students spend around a couple of hours a week in the exam room for their ‘supervised study’ (independent working time) so, when it comes to the ‘real thing’, students tend to feel more at home compared to walking into a great hall with hundreds of desks, as is the case in many other schools.
Our Tutors
Many of our tutors have been working at Barts for 10+ years and some have been here since 1985, when the college first opened. We pick our tutors for their expert subject knowledge, their passion for teaching young people, and their boundless patience and flexibility. Our tutors are highly experienced and skilled in their subjects and their students make excellent progress under the close supervision of the two Directors of Studies, Katie and Lauren. Many of our tutors are also GCSE and A Level examiners, so they know just what to do to get great results!
Katie has been working at Barts for five years, first as College Manager then later as a Director of Studies. She is unfailingly kind and understanding and uses her skills and expertise gained through her Masters in Childhood and Youth Studies to ensure that all of her students feel welcome and safe here.
Lauren joined Barts in January 2022 as College Manager and was soon promoted to the role of Director of Studies alongside this position. Lauren has a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sussex University. Her organisational skills are second to none and she helps keep the college running smoothly. Prior to joining Barts, Lauren worked for a local marketing firm and spent her free time volunteering for Brighton Youth Club. She is pleased to be able to use her skills and experience gained there in supporting her supervisees, both academically and pastorally.
Study Skills
Although most tutors will cover these aspects in tutorials, when appropriate, students are encouraged to receive specific coaching in study skills, examination tactics and essay technique. This is of particular help to students who find it difficult to organise their time and work effectively.
UCAS Support
At Barts, a student’s supervisor, Chris or Katie, will support each potential university student throughout the entire UCAS process, from registration to referencing. We will liaise with parents throughout, so that you can feel confident that your son or daughter can continue on their academic journey.
We have particular success with Medicine applicants, particularly those who have applied and failed in the past.
Social Life
Barts is a small college, with anywhere between 30-50 students in a single academic year. Owing to their bespoke timetables, students are never all in at the same time. Because of this, Barts is a very un-intimidating place to attend school and new students often feel completely at ease within a day or two. Due to the small nature of the college, new students are introduced slowly to other students (all of whom are welcoming and kind) and are able to build friendships at their own pace, if they wish to do so. We have a small student common room and run termly socials such as meals out, bowling, mini-golf, and picnics.
If a student is particularly nervous, we would encourage you to pop in for an informal chat and a quick tour of the college, so that you can see first hand how warm and supportive our college is.
