GCSE Private Tuition
Deciding where to send your child for their GCSEs is a very important decision. If you are looking for a college that is dedicated to its students’ wellbeing, supportive of their goals and encourages them academically, Barts could make that decision easier for you.
Experienced staff
Our Directors of Studies have years of experience working with GCSE and A level students and know how to get the best out of them, both personally and in terms of their grades. Each student is assigned a personal supervisor, usually one of our Directors of Studies, who meets with them once a week to discuss their academic progress. Supervisors are also there to support students on a pastoral level. Past students of Barts have expressed appreciation of the space they are given here. Not only to discuss academic or personal issues, but also to be seen and heard as an individual, something which can be lacking in a bigger school.
Our tutors are incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, with many of them having worked here for over 10 years – and some having been here since we opened 36 years ago. Due to the 1:1 nature of our college, tutors can create an entirely tailor-made approach to teaching their students. Tutors can work at the pace of each student meaning greater syllabus coverage in a shorter amount of time, with some of our GCSE students having completed their courses in just one year. Our tutors, many of whom are examiners themselves, are able to pass on a wealth of knowledge and skills in terms of a student’s preparation for their upcoming examinations. Throughout the year, GCSE students are set monthly tests in our exam room under timed conditions, which helps them get used to an exam setting.
Exam centre
Barts is a registered exam centre for Pearson, AQA, OCR and Eduqas. If a student is starting their GCSEs with us from the beginning, we do have preferred exam boards, for example, Edexcel iGCSE for Maths, Science and English. However, if your child is moving to us halfway through their GCSE course, we will most likely be able to continue with the syllabus they had been studying at their previous school.
Exam Access Arrangements
Whether students have had access arrangements at previous schools or feel you are eligible for them, we can accommodate this at Barts. Each registered exam centre must have their own formal assessment, and we can arrange a date/time that fits around your schedule with our affiliated specialist assessor.
Student interaction and social life at Barts
A concern we occasionally hear from potential GCSE students is whether they will make friends at Barts. We would like to reassure you and your child that there definitely is the space to make strong and lasting friendships here. We have a common room where students spend their breaks, and we hold termly activities to encourage students to meet one another and get to know each other better. Some examples of social events we have had in the past are ice skating, bowling, picnics, games, laser tag and going out for meals. We have one or two Head Students each year whose role it is to help students integrate and become friends. We find that, as each student comes to Barts for varied reasons, there is a non-judgemental and accepting atmosphere amongst the students.
