A and AS Level Retake Private Tuition
“I came to Barts because I failed my A-levels at another college and was consequently unable to get to university on the course I wanted. After only a year at Barts I was able to turn my A-levels around, I actually had a choice of where I wanted to go. I credit this to the amazing tuition I was lucky enough to receive at Barts. My tutors were incredible. Bottom line: If you’re looking to get to Uni I thoroughly recommend Bartholomew’s Tutorial College.” — Former A Level student at Barts
Why do students retake their A levels at Barts?
- They need higher grades for their desired university course
- They have missed lot of teaching time due to illness/mental health difficulties/personal difficulties, and need a more focused and supportive environment
- Some students or mature students who have changed direction in their career and need a different subject for a certain course/internship/apprenticeship
We see students of varying academic abilities each year, and one of the most fulfilling parts of our job is seeing the value added from when a student joins us, to when they leave. This is both in terms of their grades and their self-confidence. This can be especially true for A level retake students who may have had their confidence knocked from attaining grades lower than they were expecting.
Learning at Barts
Having 1:1 tuition and a course that is entirely tailor made for the individual offers students a motivating environment in which they can take a fresh look at the syllabus and reengage with their subjects. Our tutors have years of experience teaching A level retake students and are able to assess and hone in on the gaps in their knowledge. Many of our tutors are examiners for exam boards, so can pass on a wealth of knowledge when it comes to examination preparation and technique. Students at Barts are treated as young adults, engaging in debates, and taking a fully active role in class. This helps to prepare them for their next steps at University or in the workplace.
Supervision
Each student is assigned a personal supervisor who they meet with weekly to discuss their academic progress, as well as any issues they may face whilst studying with us. The supervisors, usually one of the Directors of Studies, are very experienced in both academic and pastoral matters. Both of our Directors of Studies have counselling training. This means that the support students receive at Barts is second to none. Students are seen and treated as the individuals they are.
UCAS
Supervisors are also on hand to guide students through the UCAS application process. This will form part of the weekly meeting they have, where supervisors will help with the planning of personal statements, as well as exploring University choices. For more information UCAS, please head to our page help with university applications here
Exam centre
Barts is a registered exam centre for Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Eduqas which means students who join us for A level retakes should be able to sit the same board as they did at their previous college. If, for any reason, students are not able to continue with the same board, tutors and the student’s supervisor will look at all syllabuses to find the board most similar, to make the transition as easy as possible.
Exam Access Arrangements
Whether students have had access arrangements at previous schools or feel you are eligible for them, we can accommodate this at Barts. Each registered exam centre must have their own formal assessment, and we can arrange a date/time that fits around your schedule with our affiliated specialist assessor.
Social life at Barts
Despite being small, students do socialise at Barts. We have a common room where students spend their breaks together, and we hold termly activities to encourage students to get to know each other better. Some examples of social events we have had in the past are ice skating, bowling, picnics, games, laser tag and going out for meals. We have one or two Head Students each year whose role it is to help students integrate and become friends. We find that, as each student comes to Barts for varied reasons, there is a non-judgemental and accepting atmosphere amongst the students.
