A and AS Level Private Tuition
Since opening our doors in 1985, Barts has seen hundreds of students through their A levels and on to their next steps. Be that university, an apprenticeship or making the first steps into a career, we can help you to get to where you want to go. Past students of ours have gone on to study at Oxbridge, gain internships with Disney as well as starting and running a successful jewellery company.
We can be entirely flexible with courses at Barts and we do not have any entry requirements. There are no restrictions on the combination of subjects studied – if a student is interested in it, they can learn about it. This is also true for students who would like to start A levels, but may have to retake some of their GCSE subjects. We are able to schedule timetables to enable students to study towards their GCSE retakes alongside studying their A levels.
Barts places an emphasis on value added in terms of grades. We encourage our students to achieve to the best of their abilities, whatever that may look like for them.

Supervision
Each student is assigned a personal supervisor who they meet with weekly to discuss their academic progress, as well as any issues they may face whilst studying with us. The supervisors, usually one of the Directors of Studies, are very experienced in both academic and pastoral matters. Both of our Directors of Studies have counselling training. This means that the support students receive at Barts is second to none. Students are seen and treated as the individuals they are.
UCAS
Supervisors are also on hand to guide students through the UCAS application process. This will form part of the weekly meeting they have, where supervisors will help with the planning of personal statements, as well as exploring University choices. For more information on UCAS, please visit our ‘Help with university applications’ page that can be found here
Learning at Barts
Our tutors are incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, with many of them having worked here for over 10 years – and some since we opened 36 years ago. Because all lessons are 1:1 tutors can create an entirely tailor-made approach to teaching their students. They can work at the pace of each student meaning greater syllabus coverage in a shorter time. This has enabled some of our A level students to complete the course in just one year. Although this is not possible with all A levels, some of the subjects that lend themselves well to being completed in a year are Business, Sociology, Media/Film Studies, Classical Civilisation, Psychology and English Language and Literature.
Our tutors, many of whom are examiners themselves, are able to pass on a wealth of knowledge and skills in terms of a student’s preparation for their upcoming examinations. A level students typically have two supervised study (SS) sessions a week. SS takes place in our Exam room in the afternoon and is supervised by our Exams Officer, Nicola Wickham. Tutors will set monthly tests for students to complete under timed conditions in SS. This helps students in that they get used to the exam room and working under timed conditions, and also enables the tutors to monitor progress, and see any gaps in knowledge.
AS levels
We still believe that it is important and beneficial for students to sit their AS levels after the first year of their exams. Not only can students gain an extra qualification towards their UCAS points, it gives them practice in an A level exam scenario, and enables our tutors to find any gaps in their knowledge from their first year of studies.
Exam centre
Barts is a registered exam centre for Pearson, AQA, OCR and Eduqas. If a student is starting their A levels with us from the beginning, we do have preferred exam boards, for example, AQA for Sociology, Edexcel for Maths. However, if a student is moving to us halfway through their A level course, we will most likely be able to continue with the syllabus they had been studying at their previous College.
Exam Access Arrangements
Whether students have had access arrangements at previous schools or feel you are eligible for them, we can accommodate this at Barts. Each registered exam centre must have their own formal assessment, and we can arrange a date/time that fits around your schedule with our affiliated specialist assessor.
Social life at Barts
Despite being small, students do socialise at Barts. We have a common room where students spend their breaks together, and we hold termly activities to encourage students to get to know each other better. Some examples of social events we have had in the past are ice skating, bowling, picnics, games, laser tag and going out for meals. We have one or two Head Students each year whose role it is to help students integrate and become friends. We find that, as each student comes to Barts for varied reasons, there is a non-judgemental and accepting atmosphere amongst the students.
